GIRL POWER: 7 Ways to Support Girls

How can we make progress towards girls’ empowerment without encouraging and helping each other? When girls are catty and competitive towards each other, they create separation and weaken the potential for ALL girls. In order to make a difference in the world, we must support and empower the girls around us.

Here are 7 tips on how to support girls:

1. Ignore rumors and gossip.

Don’t gossip about girls around you; it could really hurt them. Instead of tearing girls down, focus on bringing them up. Don’t be so quick to judge girls around you based on the rumors and gossip you hear.

2. Reach out to other girls.natl-girlfriends-day vertical

If you see a girl struggling with one of her classes or having friendship issues, support her and be there for her.

3. Start a club.

A great way to bring girls together to discuss issues and take action is by starting a club at your school or in your community.

4. Write a letter to a newspaper editor.

Bring issues that are important to you to people’s attention by submitting a letter to the editor of a local newspaper.

5. Host a girls empowerment event.

Host an event to discuss the issues you see in the world. Talk about how you can make a difference. Offer advice and support to each other!

6.Raise your voice.

If you see an issue in your community or you see a girl being bullied, speak up. If you don’t say something, nothing will change.

7. Be a friend.

Treat other girls how you treat your friends. You don’t have to be best friends with everyone, but you also don’t have to be best friends with someone to treat her well and support her. Be kind and accepting; give the girls around you a chance. Give them respect. Isn’t that what you want? Sisterhood is a powerful force; be a friend to girls everywhere by using it.  ~Written by Paige Sheffield
