Hello, Summer! School is over, the sun is out, and there are so many fun things to do: Get outside, hang out with friends, be active, relax, and of course, read BYOU Magazine! But while you’re enjoying your summertime activities, don’t forget that you have to take care of yourself too!
Here are 5 tips for you to stay healthy and safe during summer fun…
- Keep Hydrated!
When you’re playing outside all day at summer camp or hanging out at the beach or pool your body can get dehydrated quicker. Make sure you’re drinking enough water throughout the day. Eight glasses a day is the average and always remember to drink filtered water, not plain tap! Be sure to read our safe drinking water tips to the right to make sure you have healthy water habits. - Fun in the Sun!
Studies show that everyone should get at least 15 minutes of sun a day for Vitamin D absorption; it builds your immune system and helps mood! But if you’re going to be out in the sun longer during the hottest part of the day (10am-4pm), make sure you apply sunscreen. The sun is extra strong during the summer months, and sunburn is no fun. Look for sunscreens without toxic chemicals like oxybenzone, there are plenty of super-effective “healthier” sunscreens out there! Did you know good ol’ coconut oil has an SPF of 10? Other ways to protect yourself are wearing lightweight clothing, and hats and sunglasses are helpful to protect your face. Even stepping into the shade for frequent breaks is good for you. BTW, if you’re feeling tired or weak, let an adult know.
- Bugs bugging?
Everyone agrees that mosquitoes are annoying, right? Try using a citronella mosquito repellent candle or natural bug spray (without harmful DEET) to keep them away. We love the Honest Company brand bug spray because it contains only natural organic ingredients like citronella, peppermint, lemongrass, and geranium essential oils and smells SO good! A live citronella plant on your deck outside is a great natural way to repel mosquitoes without having to spray chemicals on your skin – another natural way to prevent bug bites is to wear clothing that covers your skin. Mosquitoes aren’t the only thing to be mindful of; if you play outside in tall grass or in the woods be sure to check your body for ticks after!
- Swim Safely
Swimming is one of the best things about summer! When you go swimming at the ocean, lakes, pools, etc. be sure you know where your parents and lifeguards are at all times. Always ask for help if you’re nervous about swimming. - Accidents Happen
Sure you could sit in the house and avoid potential outdoor accidents, but what fun would that be? Riding bikes, running around, and playing sports can increase your chances of an accident, so think SAFETY. Be sure to wear a helmet when riding your bikes, scooters, and skateboards. Also, make sure you have an adult and first aid kit near by in case someone gets hurt.
Enjoy the fun of summer but remember to think about your safety and health when you’re playing outside. Your safety comes first!
