On Sunday, November 29 at 7pm ET/PT Nickelodeon will air the 2015 HALO Awards! This special concert will honor young community leaders who are making a difference. We are excited because one of BYOU Magazine’s “Girls Making A Difference”, Riley Gantt (15) is one of this years’ HALO Award honorees! Other honorees include Ethan Cruikshank (16), Joshua Williams (14), and Ruchita Zaparde (18). Find out more about the honorees below!
This one-of-a-kind concert, award show combo will feature a special appearance by pop-icon Justin Bieber and performances by Fifth Harmony, DNCE with lead singer Joe Jonas, Flo Rida, Tori Kelly, and WALK THE MOON! All of these amazing stars will join host, creator, and executive producer Nick Cannon to honor and celebrate the teens who are “Helping and Leading Others.”
Nick Cannon shares, ” There’s no better way to begin the holiday season than by celebrating the amazing work of these four teens and our first HALO Hall of Fame recipient Justin Bieber at the Nickelodeon HALO Awards.”

This year’s HALO Award honorees:
You might be familiar with the honoree Riley Gantt and her organization, The Rainbow Pack! Riley was featured in our 2014 Back-to-School issue! Riley began The Rainbow Pack when she was only 10 years old. The entire organization is dedicated to providing elementary school students with supplies regardless of their economic circumstances. This year Riley has donated 9,000 backpacks filled with supplies to underprivileged students in the Los Angeles, CA area!
Ethan Cruikshank from Mechanicsville, VA is a big music lover! He began playing the guitar at 7. After his school cut music education funding, Ethan was inspired to start his music program, Music to My Ears! This music program has helped over 100 kids over 4 states by providing them with free music lessons through volunteer teachers, and giving instruments to those who can’t afford them!
Joshua Williams has a passion for feeding the hungry and it all began when he was 4 in his hometown of Miami, FL when he gave a starving man food. Since then, Joshua started Joshua’s Heart Foundation and has designed a food distribution system in local churches, schools, and community centers. He has distributed over 1.1 million pounds of food in South Florida, Jamaica, and Africa!
Ruchita Zaparde from Plainsboro, NJ received her inspiration for helping others after a family trip to India. While in India, Ruchita was exposed to the difficulties of widows. So, she started Sew A Future, which helps those women become seamstresses so they can support their families. Ruchita raises money and delivers sewing machines and supplies to the widows in India. She has helped over 200 families with the gift of a sewing machine!
Nickelodeon has also announced its’ new show, The HALO Effect, hosted by Instant Mom star, Sydney Park! This new docu-series will profile young activists who are making positive changes in their community. Each episode will focus on a special teen who is taking on issues like poverty, helping military families, the environment, and many more. You can look forward to seeing the first episode of The HALO Effect in January 2016!
