With a new school year upon us, you’re going to have the opportunity to make new friends! However, you’re another year older and another year wiser. Make sure you are being smart about your new and old friendships. BYOU Magazine has some smart friendship tips to make sure you have the best friendships. You probably wonder, “what makes a true friendship?” Check out our tips below to determine if you have a true friendship or a fake one!
Friendships should bring you pleasure, not pain.
If a friend is treating you badly, he or she probably isn’t worth having as a friend. At first, it might be hard to break up the friendship, but there is another friend out there who will treat you in a more respectful way. As the saying goes, “When one door closes, another one opens.”
A true friend will accept you for YOU.
Real friends don’t try to change you, make you feel like there is something wrong with you, or make fun of you. A true friend understand and appreciates you for who you are.
By being yourself, you attract friends who like you for YOU. If you fake who you are, you only attract friends who like the fake you, no the real you– and that will only make you unhappy in the long run. Don’t change who you are to be liked by others. You can find plenty of people who love you just the way you are!
Avoid making friends with kids who are gossipy, sarcastic, or judgmental.
If they’re talking about other negatively to you, chances are they’ll talk to others the same way about you.
Listen to your “Heartlight” for guidance.
That little voice inside of you will always let you know what’s right for you. If you get an uneasy or uncomfortable feeling about a friend or about something a friend is doing, pay attention to it. It’s probably telling you to reconsider your choices. On the other hand, if you feel excited or enthusiastic about someone, it’s steering you in the right direction to “follow your heart.”
To have a good friend you also have to BE one!
You always attract others like you, so if you’re being kind, thoughtful, respectful, fun and silly, that type of friend will show up! You need to first BE the friend you want, which brings up to our last tip…
Remember that the very best friend you have should always be YOU.
You need to love yourself first before anyone else can love you, so spend some time getting to know your own BFF: YOU! Friends will come and go, but you will always have you.
