The celebration continues in honor of Girl Scout Week here at BYOU Magazine!
Today we profile another Girl Scout Gold Award honoree. She is a member of the Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles and is from Temple City, CA – meet Joanna Hua.
For her Girl Scout Gold Award project, Joanna Hua (Ambassador Girl Scout, grade 11) focused on raising awareness about depression and spreading positivity to help remove social stigmas from mental illness.
She established a “Random Acts of Kindness” week at her high school and expanded it to her middle school, which plans to make it an annual event. Joanna set up stations to collect positive messages from students at school and at public libraries and dispersed them via rubber bracelets and posters—with phrases like “You are unique” and “You are beautiful.”
She also created and distributed brochures with information on mental illness and misconceptions of mental illness from the National Institute of Mental Health.
“I am reaching out to those who need it and drawing from my own experiences with depression to guide others,” Joanna said. “My past was a terrifying bridge to cross, all rickety and unsafe. But, I have successfully crossed the bridge and now my job is to guide others across it, cheering them on from the other side with thousands of others—including Girl Scouts—supporting them.”
