The hit movie, Soul Surfer, is about the inspiring BYOU Magazine Be Healthy cover girl, Bethany Hamilton. Bethany is a pro-surfer; how cool is that?! However, on October 31, 2003, at the young age of 13, a 14-foot tiger shark attacked Bethany. She lost over 60% of her blood and her left arm. That didn’t stop her from achieving her dreams. In fact, she believes everything happens for a reason. She proves that by the huge impact she is making on the world since her accident.

Bethany not only became a professional surfer at the young age of 17, but has won numerous surfing competitions, wrote a healthy living book, Body & Soul: A Girl’s Guide to a Fit, Fun, and Fabulous Life, and even starting her own charity, Friends of Bethany. She strives to inspire girls through encouragement and being a positive role model. BYOU Magazine featured Bethany Hamilton in our “B-Healthy” Spring 2015 issue where our editor-in-chief Debra Gano chatted with Bethany about her life and about being healthy!

Here’s an excerpt from our exclusive interview with Bethany Hamilton:

Q: What does it feel like to be such a big inspiration and role models to others?

Bethany: To be honest, it can feel overwhelming, so I just have to be myself and not think about the way other people think of me. I don’t really like a lot of attention from people, but somehow I’ve gotten a lot of attention from a lot of people! I’m shy by nature, but I’ve definitely opened up more because of the life I’ve lived.

Q: What healthy habit tips do you have for girls?

Bethany: No matter what your age, it’s extremely important to find healthy exercise habits you love to do because, not only is it good for our bodies, it’s good for our mind. A lot of our culture has influenced us to come home from school and watch TV and eat junk food. I promise, once you start getting into your favorite activity and eating healthier, it’s so much more rewarding. You just feel better about yourself as a while (and if you don’t have that bowl of ice cream every day, it’s so much more of a treat when you do)! Our bodies are made to move, to get out and be active. I don’t love running, but I do love how I feel after I run. I’ll do short runs, like one or two miles, and after, it feels so good to be done with something that was kind od challenging and I feel good about myself. It’s so important to get outside and get fresh air, getting away from schoolwork, your cell phone, or the TV. Take a break from all that and enjoy the beautiful creation God has for us. You can clear your head and think on different things, there’s just so many different benefits to getting outside.

#Bhealthy tip: You can’t measure a fit lifestyle by the numbers (on a scale or size), only by the actions you take every day.

#Bhealthy tip: Mix in other kinds of exercise, like hiking, tennis, basketball, or swimming.





Bethany also shared a few fave easy-to-make and good-for-you smoothie recipes featured in her book, Body & Soul: A Girl’s Guide to a Fit, Fun, and Fabulous Life.

 No-Banana Smoothie, Serves 1: 

  • clip-21 cup kale
  • 1 large gala apple, roughly chopped
  • 1 english cucumber, peeled and roughly chopped
  • 1 tbsp.gresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 tbsp. coconut oil
  • 4-5 ice cubesPlace all ingredients except ice into a high-speed blender, blend until smooth. Add ice and repeat.

Mango, Avocado, and Lime Smoothie, Serves 1: 

  • 1/4 cup avocado sliced clip-3
  • 1 cup mango
  • 1 tbsp. lime juice
  • 1 tbsp. fresh mint
  • 1 tsp. honey (optional)
  • 2 cups crushed icePlace all ingredients into the blender (expect the ice). Blend on high until smooth. Add ice and blend again.

Bethany’s Big Announcement! 

On June 15, 2015 our Be Healthy cover girl announced the birth of her son, Tobias. He was born on June 1, 2015 and weighed 7.9 pounds and was 21” long. Tobias means, “The goodness of God.” Wow! What a beautiful name! Here is the pic she posted on her social media sites with her husband, Adam, and their newborn. Congrats, Bethany!
